Appreciation for Race Photographers

Appreciation for Race Photographers

Posted by Marissa Fajbik on Jun 14th 2023

No matter where you race, there's sure to be photographers there. There's a lot of hard work behind the images you see, and purchasing those pictures is a great for having memories to look back on.

Photography is important because pictures help us hold memories. Specifically for race photographs, you can look back on pictures to see how you've improved and remember specific races or bikes you had. Same goes for similar sports like dirt track racing. Read more about the importance of race photography here. Photos are great to have as keepsakes and can be used for many things such as on racing resumes, banners, or printed to hang up in frames. We can use high resolution photos from photographers to create custom banners! Just contact us at support@sengegraphics.com to order.

It's definitely difficult to capture the right moments on the race track. Speed plays a huge role because riders are zooming past. Photographers need to adjust camera settings to capture a clear image. The unpredictable weather can also have an impact, as their cameras can take a beating from rain, snow and mud. It is worth noting that these photographers are fighting against conditions and hiking to the best spot to get the perfect shot of you.

Lots of time goes into the pictures you see from these photographers. From setting up their cameras beforehand, to grabbing the right shots during the event, to uploading and editing the images- tons of hard work is behind the pictures you see, which is why it's great to support them! Some photographers even offer photo passes that allow you to download your pictures for the whole season.

Here are some photographers we know of from series near us:

AWRCS:

GNCC:

PAMX:

Lou Milliard/LM Action Sports Photography

Lou attends AWRCS races, which are in Pennsylvania and occasionally Ohio. He started taking pictures at the races because of his nephew, but soon started capturing others too. This is his second season taking pictures. Lou is kicking off the season with 10 sponsored riders from the youth and adult ATV classes. His goal is to showcase their hard work throughout the season and allow them to use his images to collect more sponsors and further their racing careers.

What started off as Lou Milliard Photography has branched into a second business called LM Action Sports Photography, specifically for the races. "I’ve been a portrait photographer as my main job for the past four years. But as a GNCC racer back in the late 2000’s I’ve always had a passion for off-road racing. And I always had subscriptions to Dirt Bike Magazine and Dirt Wheels magazine since the late 80s. I loved seeing the pictures in the magazines and now I am taking those exact same pictures. The best part about being a race photographer is capturing the camaraderie between the racers, those epic moments of the jitters before the start, the battle for the hole-shot, and trying to get that perfect photo that shows their determination to win. And after it’s all done when I post some of the pictures hearing how much that photo means to them. It's a great feeling that my photos are being liked by so many."

Lou has captured a lot of bikes with our graphics on them! Aaron Krause pictured below with our Space Kadet kit on a Can-am Renegade.

Jami G Photography

You'll find Jamison attending all the GNCC races. She is based out of Waxhaw, North Carolina. Jami got her first camera at the John Penton on her 12th birthday in 2015, but didn't start taking photography seriously until 2020. Not only does she do race photography, Jamison also captures photos for seniors, couples, families and branding. She has also done product and event photography. She is willing to capture anything you might need, but loves senior and couple sessions the most (behind racing photos, of course).

Jamison's favorite part of being a race photographer is being able to capture race weekends for everyone. She knows everyone at the track each weekend is there because they live for racing, "They’re going to look back at these photos and remember exactly how they were feeling that weekend. My favorite part of the race weekend to shoot would have to be the post race photos. I love capturing that raw emotion after they’re battling on the track for 2 hours. The post race smiles are the best though!" (photo credit to Jami G Photography for the thumbnail picture on this article).

Jami frequently captures one of our sponsored pros, Ronnie Rusch. Check out his photo below with his custom YFZ 450R kit!

Keystone Terri Photography

If you've ever been to a PAMX race, chances are you've seen Terri. She has been doing photography professionally for 2 years, but has had a camera in her hand since high school. Terri also travels to tracks in Northeast Pennsylvania for various events, including local tracks when they're open for practice. She mainly focuses on motocross, especially in the last 2 years, but is also interested in shooting portraits and other events. Street photography is her favorite niche.

Terri's favorite part about being a race photographer is the atmosphere, "Race day is like nothing else--the emotion, the pace of the day, the action on the track, the commandery--it's difficult for me to put into words. Capturing these moments for the families is such a privilege."

Check out the image below Terri captured of a kit we made for Katie Goodman. Katie designed the shrouds herself on paper and we made her vision come to life with our Throwback kit (see pictures below)!

Remember that lots of hard work goes into race photography both during the race and behind the scenes. These photographers are working to capture moments and memories within your racing career, so be sure to give them lots of support!
