- Get Enough Sleep
- Getting enough sleep before a race is extremely important. You will want to be as alert and awake as possible to properly handle your dirt bike. Racing takes a lot of energy and physical effort, so being well rested will prepare you to do well. Most adult dirt bikes weigh around 200 pounds, so you will need the strength to maneuver it. Check out this article from Risk Racing for more information about the physical effort it takes to race a dirt bike.
- Stay Hydrated and Eat Healthy
- Drink lots of water in the days leading up to a race to avoid being dehydrated. Being well hydrated also helps with focus and concentration. Since racing is so physical on your body, drinking water will help you refresh and be in top shape. It's also a good idea to pack drinks like water and Gatorade to take with you to races. You can use them in your Camelback during the race too. It's likely you will sweat during a race no matter the weather, so make sure to replenish water to your body.
- Lots of racers like to eat healthy before a race to help your body feel good. Healthy foods will spike your energy levels too. Nutrient dense foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean meat, poultry or fish are all great options. Extra fattening food like fast food or greasy things should be avoided, as well as alcohol. There are specific diets for racing that you could follow, but make sure to follow your body's specific needs. Read more about racing diets here. This article also provides information on foods for recovery in the days afterwards.
- Stretch and Exercise
- Stretching can prevent strain on your body from the physical demands of riding a dirt bike. Stretching consistently will help loosen your body for better performance on your bike. Check out this motocross stretching routine for ideas. Keeping up with stretching can also help prevent injuries while racing, like pulled muscles. Make sure to stretch right before the race too to ensure your body is ready.
- You should also have a consistent workout routine for the same reasons as above. Set aside time to work out at least once a week, especially during race season. Taking care of your body will lead to the best results when racing. Things like strengthening your arms will help prevent discomfort such as arm pump.

You may also need cash to get in or pay for food or parts.
- Check Dirt Bike Condition
- Of course it is important to keep yourself in line, but you'll also want to keep tabs on the condition of your bike. Ensure your bike is in proper working order by going over everything before a race. You'll want to give yourself ample time to order parts if necessary.
