Electric Dirt Bikes are Taking Over

Posted by marissa Fajbik on Mar 26th 2025

As the years go on, we are seeing more and more electric dirt bikes on the market. Last week we talked about the ETM RTR, an electric pit bike made by Electro & Co. This time, we are going to dive deeper into other manufacturers who are offering electric dirt bike options.

Better for the Earth

Lots of people are switching to electric dirt bikes for the sake of environmental impact. Traditional dirt bikes can be linked to air pollution from burning fuel. The fumes from the exhaust release carbon monoxide and other pollutants into the air. Switching to an electric powered dirt bike helps avoid this. Riders are becoming more aware of the environmental impact their traditional dirt bikes have, which is the main reason for making the swap to electric.

Electric dirt bikes also help avoid noise pollution, because they are much quieter than the engines of gas powered dirt bikes. Noise from dirt bikes has been a problem for a long time- neighbors don’t typically like to hear the noises associated with dirt bike riding. Electric bikes could be the resolution to this!

Gas vs Electric

Electric dirt bikes come with a higher price tag than the traditional gas powered ones, but they could save you money in the long run. You forgo the need to buy fuel and other fluids related to gas engines, such as oil. Electric bikes are compiled of less parts, meaning there is less to replace over time.

Electric bikes also have a lower center of gravity due to the battery, which means the rider will improve on stability and control. They are lighter too, which can make it easier to ride for most. This is great for beginners who are just getting into riding dirt bikes.

Disadvantages

One possible disadvantage of electric dirt bikes is the amount of time the battery allows you to ride. As time goes on, they are becoming increasingly better with the length of ride time. Some of these bikes even use regenerative braking, which uses the bike’s kinetic energy during deceleration and turns it back into power for the battery. Alternatively, if you still aren’t happy with the ride time, you could have spare batteries to change out when needed.

Since electric dirt bikes are a newer concept, they will be harder to find used options if you are on a budget. Unfortunately, they have a higher up front cost that is not ideal for everyone's price range. However, as time goes on- that will change and they will become more affordable and readily available.

The manufacturers we know and love are adapting to the idea of electric dirt bikes. Every year, we see more and more being added to the list. Here are some we have:

As time goes on, you can likely expect to see more electric dirt bikes out on the track. They are becoming increasingly powerful, able to keep up with gas powered ones. They deliver instant torque, quick acceleration, and a smooth ride. As they become more popular, the price gap should close and make them more comparable to the cost of traditional dirt bikes. Expect to see electric dirt bikes that have extended range/ride times with shorter battery charging lengths. Electric dirt bikes could redefine the world of racing!
